Zach Robins scores 5 goals for Championship game.

Zach Robins scored five goals as Mainland rallied from a two goal deficit to defeat Black Horse 6-5 in the JVB Title game played at Voorhees. Trailing 3-1, Mainland scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead, before Black Horse rallied back.

Scott Veneziale and Nick Finocchiaro scored in the opening nine minutes to give Black Horse a 2-0 lead. Mainland got one back late in the period as Robins scored with Tim Vant getting the first of his three assists. Kevin Oneill scored at the five minute mark of the second period to give Black Horse a 3-1 advantage. Mainland then would score four goals in the next six minutes to capture a 5-3 lead after two. Robins would account for three of them and Frank Christy got the other.

Robins completed his five goal night at the three minute mark of the third period and Mainland would seemingly be in control at 6-3. But Black Horse would rally as Veneziale would score his second of the night on a nice shot along the ice. Then with the goalie pulled for an extra skater Veneziale scored his third goal, but Black Horse would get no closer. Congratulations to Mainland and their staff.

Mainland JV holds off St. Joe's.

In a crazy third period where five goals were scored in the last five minutes Mainland held on to defeat St Joe’s 6-5 in a Tier III battle to open up the action at the Skate Zone. With the loss St Joe’s was eliminated from the playoffs. Mainland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Sean Bowman and one on the power play by Josh Handshaw. St Joe’s would rally late in the period as Nick Frangos found Paulie Petrongolo in the slot with just over one minute left in the period. And with just 12 seconds left Tristen Ridarelli tied the score at 2-2.

Bowman and Bruce Stanton traded goals in the second period and we were tied at 3-3 heading into the third period. With less than five minutes left and looking like overtime was a possibility, suddenly both teams started scoring. Tim Vant gave Mainland a 4-3 lead but thirty seconds later Frangos got the tying goal. Right off the center ice face-off Mainland broke in and Jack Handshaw broke the tie putting home a rebound of a shot by Matt Schenkov. Vant scored thirty seconds later to give Mainland some breathing room at 6-4. Frangos scored with two minutes left to make it 6-5, and despite pulling the goalie, St Joe’s just ran out of time.

Mainland Varsity loses to Riverfront for Championship.

Nick Taylor had two goals and Ian Martin made 29 saves as Riverfront defeated Mainland 5-2 to win the Tier III Title. Winning wire to wire like they did Riverfront led the division all season and went undefeated in the tournament. Mainland took a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game as Paddy McFadden scored his first of the playoffs. Riverfront responded thirty seconds later as Taylor tied the score. Taylor would score late in the period to give Riverfront a 2-1 lead after one.

Martin was solid and steady in nets just like during the regular season where his GAA was 2.02 and in the playoffs he was at 2.00. Riverfront took a 3-1 lead as Mike McFadden scored a power play goal in the final seconds of the second period. Matt Schenkov got Mainland to within 3-2 in the opening minute of the third period, but right off the face-off, Jeff Steinmann restored the lead back to two goals with Jordan Bentley getting the assist. In the final five minutes Nate Viereck iced the game for Riverfront and Martin shut the door on Mainland. Congratulations to Coach McGrath and his staff and all the players.
